To our knowledge, this is the first evidence studying the array of charter school regulations and their effects on students and schooling. One potential reason for this gap in the research is that regulatory changes often come in larger packages of reform that make it difficult to isolate particular policy aspects, such as having a statewide charter authorizer, from other policies.
