The Effects of Restorative Approaches to Discipline in New Orleans Schools

This mixed methods study uses New Orleans data from 2008 to 2016 to examine the effects of implementing restorative approaches in schools on suspension rates and academic outcomes. Through quasi-experimental data analysis and qualitative interviews, the authors find that restorative practices can have a positive impact on school environments, reducing violent behavior suspensions and strengthening intra-school relationships. The data revealed that restorative practices reduced suspensions for students with prior suspensions, especially for violent infractions. However, the impact on overall suspension rates and academic performance was limited. The findings highlight the critical role of proper implementation and training in the success of restorative approaches, suggesting they can significantly influence disciplinary actions and school culture.
